Bi Layer Tablet Making Machine

Bi Layer Tablet Making Machine

Bi Layer Tablet Making Machine (also known as Bilayer Tablet Press or Bi-layer Tablet Compression Machine) is a specialized pharmaceutical equipment designed to produce bilayer tablets. These tablets consist of two distinct layers, each containing different formulations, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), or release profiles (e.g., one layer for immediate release and the other for sustained/controlled release).

This machine allows combining two incompatible APIs in one tablet, improves patient compliance by reducing the number of pills, and enables modified drug release in a single dosage form.

Key Features of Bi Layer Tablet Making Machine

  • Dual hoppers/feeders — Separate systems for feeding two different powder/granule formulations without cross-contamination.

  • Two-stage compression — First layer is filled and pre-compressed (tamped), then the second layer is added on top, followed by final main compression to bond both layers firmly.

  • Independent weight and compression control for each layer — Ensures accurate dosing, uniform thickness, and prevents layer separation or capping.

  • Pre-compression rollers — For both layers to remove air and improve bonding.

  • GMP-compliant design — Stainless steel construction, easy cleaning, and safety features.

  • Types — Available in single-sided, double-sided, or advanced displacement-monitoring models; rotary presses are most common for high output.

  • Additional features — Often include PLC controls, force monitoring, vacuum systems, scrapers to avoid mixing, and options for visual layer separation (different colors).

Working Principle

  1. Filling first layer — The die cavity passes under the first hopper; powder/granules for layer 1 are filled.

  2. Pre-compression of first layer — Light compression (tamping) shapes and slightly compacts layer 1, leaving a rough surface for good adhesion while preventing over-hardening.

  3. Filling second layer — The die moves to the second hopper; material for layer 2 is added on top of the first layer.

  4. Pre-compression of second layer — Optional light compression on the combined layers.

  5. Final main compression — Upper and lower punches apply high pressure to fuse both layers into a single, solid tablet with strong bonding.

  6. Ejection — The completed bilayer tablet is ejected, and the cycle repeats in a rotary turret system.

The process prevents mixing between layers, ensures clear separation (often visible if colored differently), and achieves desired hardness without delamination.

Advantages

  • Combines immediate + sustained release in one tablet.

  • Allows combination therapy with incompatible ingredients.

  • Improves patient adherence (fewer doses).

  • High precision and output (from lab-scale ~thousands/hour to production-scale >1 million/hour in advanced models).
